Tail Installation – Part 1

Began tail surface installation by moving tail surfaces from house to hangar. Discovered that horizontal stabilizer skins were installed upside down and that the bottom skins would need to be trimmed to fit around fuselage tail cone. Using the top side skin as a reference, trimmed bottom skin to clear fuselage tail cone. Will need to come up with a custom solution for tail fairings as there is not enough material left to mount fairings from plans. Trimmed lower horizontal stabilizer skin in multiple rounds to leave 1/16 – 1/32″ gap between fuselage and stabilizer skin. Located horizontal stabilizer per plan dimensions and pilot, squared to fuselage using laser level, and drilled to fuselage longerons. Checked elevator up travel and determined that elevator drive horn needed a small amount ground off to clear fuselage structure and allow full travel. Updrilled mounting holes to 1/4″, deburred, and installed horizontal stabilizer with AN4 hardware. Un bolted temporary tail spacers from tail spar channel and located vertical stabilizer onto fuselage. Needed to trim turtledeck skin a little to adjust vertical alignment. Noticed that the stabilizer skin was preventing up elevator travel so will need to trim that as well prior to final installation.
